Sakhile&Me

Larry Bonćhaka

Sakhile&Me is thrilled to present "Denk-mal: Relics in Crisis", a solo exhibition with Larry Bonćhaka, opening on 24 August 2023 and running until 7 October 2023. It will be the artist’s first solo exhibition at the gallery.

"Relics in Crisis" is the name of an ongoing series of works and performances by the artist, with the iconic "Auntie DeiDei" dolls, the first mass-produced plastic doll made in West Africa, at the center. “Denkmal" holds a double connotation in German meaning “monument" but also an incitement to think when written as two words, "denk mal".

As part of the show, Larry Bonćhaka will present a critical collection of relics, archival photos and texts, prints, soundscapes, collectibles, and collages that together explore themes of archiving, retrospective, time, travel, and trade, to name a few.

Larry Bonćhaka (b. 1994) is a Ghanaian multi-media artist whose practice and research focuses on socio-political engagements influenced by culture and histories. His strikingly simple, yet thoughtful still-life pieces and performances mirror the everyday systems of production and meaning making. He has received a BFA in painting and sculpture from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi and an MFA from Städelschule in Frankfurt. He is a member of the blaxTARLINES collective and a co-founder of Asafo Black collective. Recently, Larry Bonćhaka has closely collaborated with artists and architects on global art festivals such as “Theater Der Welt” in Frankfurt/Offenbach, “Documenta 15” in Kassel, and several remote projects with “COMMUNNE 6x3”.
